My great grandfather was Joseph Tomlinson, who was first sup't of parks for LA County and involved with the building of Echo Park.

Any additional info anyone can e-mail me with, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello. Have you tried contacting the City of Los ANgeles Department of Recreation and Parks? They do have an extensive archives in addition to the city's archives. Also, please let us know if you have any information related to to your great grandfather. We would be eager to gather more information about him and his role in creating Echo Park.

I have a Joseph Henry Tomlinson in my Family Tree, he married Christina McFarlane, 1871 Lanark Scotland. Joseph's parents were George Tomlinson and Kezia Brentnall.

Where is the Parks Archive located? Are they open to the public? There is a large office building on Vermont, and I've always wondered about visiting it.

Hi

My name is Jane Tomlinson and I live in Derby, England. My Grandfather Harold Tomlinson was one of Joseph Tomlinsons younger brothers. I have a family tree dating back to 1752 (wow yes we have history!).
My cousin Susan and I have been trying to trace what happened to our relatives of the past and it was fantastic to find out that Joseph created a truly beautiful park to remind him of Shipley Park in Derbyshire where his family grew up on a farm in that area.
If anyone would like to contact us that would be absolutely wonderful and maybe we can share some history together.

Kind Regards

Jane Tomlinson

Hi Christina

Thanks for your reply. It would be very interesting to hear about the MacFarlanes. Joseph's father was actually called John Tomlinson and his mother was Ellen. I will have to go back through the family tree. We knew he emigrated to the US and it is like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle being put into place.

Regards Jane

I would like to know more about the Joseph Tomlinson in this forum.  I have ancestors named Joseph and John Tomlinson but only know that they were in Bucks County, Pennsylvania a long time ago.  If the Joseph associated with Echo Park in Los Angeles is the same Joseph that was in Bucks County, perhaps he is my ancestor, as well.  Can Jane provide more info?
Thanks.

Hi
Joseph & Christina Tomlinson's family seems to be getting alittle confusing - thought I'd post some info that I have.
Joseph & Christina were married 27th Oct 1871 Milton, Glasgow, Scotland. Statutory Marriages 644/070324 states Joseph's parents being George Tomlinson deceased ,Market Gardner/ Kezia Brentnal.
Children:-
George Herbert Tomlinson b.7 Nov 1872  Sth America d.14 April 1946 LA
Jessie McAlpine Tomlinson b.2 May 1874 Sth America d. 21 Aug.1975 LA
John McFarlane Tomlibnson b.19 Mar 1877 Gartmore,Scotland d.13 Sep1957 LA
Keziah Brentnall Tomlinson b.31 Oct 1879 Bothwell,Scotland. d.14 Mar 1875 LA
Christina Tomlinson b.22 Mar 1882 Bothwell,Scotland. d.2 Feb 1970 SB
Margaret Tomlinson b.Mar 1886 California d.1972 LA.
They must have gone to America just after being married, then back to Scotland where they had 3 more children, then they went back to America in Feb.1885 on the ship 'Devonia' from Glasgow to New York.
Joseph died 13 April 1893 aged 45 of Pneumonia at his residence 1316 Omaha Street, and is buried 'Evergreen Cemetery' LA with his wife Christina nee McFarlane.
Joseph's mother Kezia married George Tomlinson, then William Hart it states on her Statutory death that she was the widow of both and her parents were Joseph Brentnall and Sarah Booth.

I don't know if anyone still checks this website but would LOVE more information about Joseph Tomlinson. He was my great-grandfather and I would be very happy to connect with anyone who has any geneological information about the family. I might be able to fill in any blank spots too.
