There are two trees bordering the west bank of Echo Park Lake. They seem to be some sort of deciduous pine -- they have short bright-green needles that fall off the tree in the winter -- just wondering if anybody knows what type of tree this is?

The Dawn Redwood, Metasequoia glyptostroboides. A survivor of the Carboniferous age. Known only from fossils until a few were discovered in China at the end of WWII.

thanks so much for solving the mystery! the dawn redwood certainly is a beautiful tree. i am thinking about planting one in my yard.


just curious: do you ever lead tree-identifying walks in echo park?
